Big Rock Candy Mountain Road Sign in Garfield County

Highway travelers were likely familiar with the famous song and recognized this name when they saw these roadside signs along Highway 89. Another folk singer, Burl Ives, released a cover of McClintock’s “Big Rock Candy Mountain” in 1949, bringing the song to the top of Billboard magazine’s country music charts once again. The popularization of automobile tourism and the song’s renewed fame attracted crowds of tourists to the Big Rock Candy Mountain Resort in the 1950s. | Source:
